ʻAʻaliʻi

The ʻaʻaliʻi (Dodonea viscosa) stands steadfast amidst the vibrant Hawaiian landscape. With its slender branches and petite oval-shaped leaves, this hardwood, evergreen shrub captivates the eye with its versatile beauty. Native to the Hawaiian Islands, the ʻaʻaliʻi is a treasured plant deeply intertwined with the history and culture of the islands.

Perhaps the most captivating aspect of the ʻaʻaliʻi plant is its adaptability. It thrives in various ecosystems, from coastal dunes to mountainous regions, and can withstand a wide range of weather conditions. An ʻōlelo noʻeau speaks to its steadfast nature:

He ʻaʻaliʻi kū makani mai au, ʻaʻohe makani nana e kūlaʻi. I am a wind resistant ʻaʻaliʻi, no gale can push me over.

The bunches of paper-like flowers with its various red and green colors are used in lei kui and lei poʻo.
